Demented-crats Plan to Force Change in Iraq Policy, Want troops to start coming home immediately
Mood:  don't ask
Topic: Lib Loser Stories
And so it begins, we are about to fail the Iraqi people in a very profound way.

Dems Plan to Force Change in Iraq Policy

Emboldened by their congressional election triumph and Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld's resignation, Democrats say they will use their new clout to force a change in Iraq policy and demand that President Bush start bringing troops home.

Rumsfeld's resignation -- and Bush's pledge to work with Democrats on issues facing the nation -- came after months of the president backing Rumsfeld and insisting the war in Iraq was on track. His arguments lost steam after voters catapulted Democrats to power in Tuesday's voting, giving Democrats control of both the House and Senate next year.

Democrats say they hope election gains would provide momentum for more than the fall of Rumsfeld.

First stop next year will be legislation calling for an undetermined number of troops to come home immediately. Though Democrats are divided over exactly what to propose, they say their effort will send a loud political signal to disgruntled U.S. voters, and to Iraqis to assume more responsibility.

"I believe a number of Republicans will want to join forces here because there's a lot of unease in the country," said Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., in line to head the Senate Armed Services Committee in the new Congress.

That dynamic may be on display even sooner than next year.

Sen. John Warner, R-Va., the current chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, already has planned an Iraq hearing for next week with top military and intelligence officials testifying.

And after Bush surprised virtually the entire capital by announcing Rumsfeld's departure on Wednesday and picking former CIA Director Robert Gates to replace him, Warner said he wants to hold Gates' confirmation hearings this year _ sessions that could become inquiries into almost every aspect of the Iraq war.

Aides say when the new Congress convenes in January, Democrats plan to call for troops to begin coming home from Iraq and to increase money for veterans and training special operations forces. Levin and Rep. Ike Skelton, D-Mo., the next chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said they also will push for more money to fix damaged military equipment.

Democrats also are awaiting the recommendations of a bipartisan panel led by former Secretary of State James Baker III on Iraq, expected by early January or sooner.

White House counselor Dan Bartlett told NBC's "Today Show" the Bush administration also hopes the commission's report will provide an impetus for "greater consensus" on Iraq policy.

House Democrats say they plan to set up a new committee next year focused on uncovering abuses in defense spending and policies, and possibly an independent commission to investigate waste and fraud associated with the billions of dollars spent to rebuild Iraq. Implementing unfulfilled recommendations by the 9/11 commission -- such as plugging holes in airport security -- is also on their agenda.

"It's going to be hearings, accountability, trying to restore trust so the people understand what the real facts are," said Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., the Marine veteran who last year called for an immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq and helped crystallize congressional opposition to the war.

While majority Democrats will have the power to demand information from the White House and control the federal pursestrings, their constitutional ability to control defense and foreign policy issues will be limited. The president still commands the armed forces and oversees diplomatic dealings with other nations.

Further, even though Democrats will control the Senate, they will do so only by a narrow 51-49 margin. Democrats will lack the two-thirds majorities needed to override presidential vetoes and enact bills the White House might oppose, and the 60 votes needed to prevent Senate Republicans from filibustering legislation.

They also might have to work to keep Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman, the longtime Democrat who won Tuesday as an independent after losing the Democratic primary, on their side.

"They're going to need to do a lot of tap-dancing on Iraq," Darrell West, a political science professor at Brown University, said of Democrats. "They need to bide their time, ask the tough questions and see how this issue plays out over the next year."

Even so, Democrats insisted -- and even Bush conceded -- that the election was about Iraq. The overwhelming sentiment voters showed against the war will put tremendous pressure on Bush and GOP lawmakers to change course in the conflict.

Polls of voters found a strong majority -- about six in 10 -- disapproved of the war in Iraq. About a fourth of those polled said they sided with Democrats on wanting to withdraw some troops from Iraq and another three in 10 said they want all troops withdrawn.

Anger over the war prompted Republicans to lose critical swing voters. Two-thirds of independent voters in the country said they disapproved of the war, with almost half of them strongly disapproving.

Voters' disapproval of the war factored heavily into nearly every tightly contested race, and many Democratic challengers won by identifying a specific timetable on when troops should come home.

In Ohio, Republican Sen. Mike DeWine, who echoed Bush's line that the United States should stay in Iraq until the job was finished, lost to Democratic Rep. Sherrod Brown, who says troops should leave within two years. In Pennsylvania, Democrat Joe Sestak beat 10-term Republican Rep. Curt Weldon after calling for troops to be withdrawn by the end of 2007.

But while setting timetables may have helped Democrats win votes, they may have a tough time pushing their plan through Congress. Democratic incumbents are divided on how soon to pull troops out of Iraq, and the party risks being held responsible by voters in the 2008 presidential elections if an abandoned Iraq collapses into a full-blown civil war.

But the White House says many Democratic critics agree that timetables are risky.

"What we're seeing is even those who are critical of the conduct or the competence of the war in Iraq all understand the consequences ... That is, if we are going to pull out of Iraq before the job is done it's going to make our country less secure," Bartlett said.

Associated Press writers David Hammer and Kimberly Hefling contributed to this report.

Pelosi aims to block Democratic hawks from key posts

Rep. Nancy Pelosi plans to sideline colleagues who are hawkish on national security in the Democratic leadership in the House.

Democratic Party sources said as House Speaker, Ms. Pelosi plans to block moves that would place hawks into important chairmanships. The sources said a key casualty would be Rep. Jane Harman, a six-term member of Congress who has cooperated with Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee.

"Nancy Pelosi wants total party discipline," a source in the Democratic Party leadership said. "If you played ball with the Republicans during this session, then you're not going to be given an important chair in the next session."

As the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, Ms. Harman was expected to become chairman of the powerful committee. But Ms. Pelosi is expected to pass over Ms. Harman for either Rep. Alcee Hastings of Florida or Rep. Silvestre Reyes of Texas, the second- and third-ranking Democrats on the intelligence panel.

The 42-member Congressional Black Caucus has been pushing for Mr. Hastings, an impeached federal judge, to become chairman. Earlier this year, the caucus was upset by Ms. Pelosi's decision to expel Rep. William Jefferson from the committee after he was accused of accepting bribes.

"There is no seniority on the Intelligence Committee," Ms. Pelosi said. "The leader or the speaker can appoint a whole new set of people."

The sources said the 61-year-old Ms. Harman, regarded as the best informed House Democrat on intelligence and technology issues, angered the liberal Ms. Pelosi by supporting the Bush administration’s policies on defense issues, particularly the war in Iraq and the Patriot Act. They said Ms. Pelosi has rebuffed lobbyists in the pro-Israel community and defense industry that sought a chairmanship for Ms. Harman.

"If Nancy Pelosi's apparent determination to deny Jane Harman the chairmanship of the House Intelligence Committee to appease the Black Caucus is any indication, Democratic control is not going to be good news for those who believe in competent oversight of the national-security apparatus," said Loren Thompson, a defense analyst at the Lexington Institute.

Ms. Harman, who helped the Democrats draft a national security agenda for the campaign, said she hoped to remain a leading voice on defense issues. She said her California constituents want her to be on the House Intelligence Committee.

"House Intelligence Committee activities are directly relevant to the major concerns of my constituents," Ms. Harman said.

Liberal thuggery at Ball State U.

By Michelle Malkin

What is it about David Horowitz that makes college students so unhinged? Once again, he was physically attacked on his way to give a campus lecture. From the Ball State University student paper in Indiana:

Two people are under arrested after one, clad in a black mask and hooded sweatshirt, attempted to throw a cream pie at David Horowitz, University Police Department Sgt. John Foster said. Police Chief Gene Burton stepped between the two, Foster said.

Later, four students who wished to remain unnamed projected "Horowitz not Welcome" onto the south side of Teachers College.

The attackers were members of Students for a Democratic Society, according to The Horse's Mouth.

The students took their cue from the university's administration, which vocally opposed his presence:

The author and critic spoke adamantly about the lack of diverse opinions at Ball State. He also singled out university President Jo Ann Gora for disapproving of his presence on campus.

"I don't understand why the president of this university would take a hostile attitude toward the students that ask me to come here, "Horowitz said.

He was invited to campus by student conservative groups.

Horowitz claimed students are missing out on key opportunities at Ball State: "Students pay $13,000 to go to this university, and they deserve a professional education, not a political indoctrination," Horowitz said.

Parents of future college students: Scratch Ball State off your list.

Daniel Baldwin Arrested On Suspicion Of Auto Theft

SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- Daniel Baldwin, one of the four acting Baldwin brothers, was arrested on suspicion of auto theft in Santa Monica, his second arrest in the city since April, police said Wednesday.

The owner of a 2003 GMC Yukon had reported it stolen from Orange County to OnStar, which reported the missing sport utility vehicle to Santa Monica police, according to the entertainment news Web site, TMZ.com.

Police found the sport utility vehicle at a Santa Monica motel and saw Baldwin getting inside the vehicle. Officers took Baldwin into custody Tuesday and recovered narcotics and drug paraphernalia from the motel room where he was allegedly staying, according to TMZ.

Baldwin was booked on suspicion of possessing illegal drugs and bail was set at $20,000. He was turned over to Orange County authorities, where the sheriff's department booked him on suspicion of grand theft auto.

Baldwin was arrested in April at another Santa Monica motel after a woman called police, saying he had threatened her. Police said they found cocaine on him. That case is pending.

Sen. Bill Nelson's Son Arrested for Battery

The son of Sen. Bill Nelson was arrested early Wednesday after allegedly pushing an officer in a confrontation hours after he had taken the stage at his father's re-election party.

Charles William Nelson, 30, was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, disorderly intoxication and resisting arrest.

According to a police department report, an officer approached Nelson when he saw a woman slumped on the ground next to him, apparently passed out. The officer said Nelson smelled strongly of alcohol.

The report quoted the younger Nelson as saying the woman, identified as Kimberly Baxter, was fine. It did not say what their relationship was.

Police say Nelson tried to pick her up and drag her away, dropping her when the officer instructed him to put her down. The report said the senator's son attempted to push the officer away, then was pepper-sprayed for two to three seconds and handcuffed.

A police spokeswoman did not immediately return a call seeking additional detail Wednesday.

Nelson lives in Washington and is a Medicaid/Medicare consultant. The senator, a Democrat, issued a statement saying he and his wife didn't know all the facts but "love our son and support him."

In Tuesday's election, the elder Nelson handily rebuffed a challenge from Republican Rep. Katherine Harris, who played a key role in the 2000 presidential election as Florida's secretary of state.

Power cuts strike western Europe

Power cuts have struck several countries in western Europe, leaving millions of people without electricity.

Power companies said the outage started in Germany with a surge in demand prompted by cold weather, and then spread to other parts of Europe.

Some five million people in France lost power, mainly in the east of the country and including parts of Paris.

"We weren't very far from a European blackout," a senior director with French power company RTE said.

Pierre Bornard told the French news agency AFP that two German high-voltage transmission lines failed, causing problems across western Europe.

This triggered a "house of cards" style system breakdown, he said.

Automatic security systems cut supplies to some customers to avoid a complete blackout.

Italy, Belgium and Spain were also affected by the power cuts.

Most electricity supplies were restored within two hours of the outage, and so far no injuries or accidents have been reported.

Fire brigades in France said they had to answer several calls from people stuck in lifts.

High speed rail links were also disrupted.

Democrats: 'No comment' on terrorists' endorsement

DNC, Clinton, Pelosi, Kennedy decline to discuss jihadists' vote of confidence

National leaders in the Democratic Party, including Howard Dean's Democratic National Committee, potential House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, possible presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and longtime party stalwart Ted Kennedy don't want to talk with WorldNetDaily about an endorsement their party has received.

The endorsement came via a WND article by Jerusalem bureau chief Aaron Klein, who interviewed leaders of several prominent Mideast terrorist organizations, including Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades and Islamic Jihad.

"Of course Americans should vote Democrat," Jihad Jaara, a senior member of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terror group, and infamous leader of the 2002 siege of Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity, told WND.

"This is why American Muslims will support the Democrats, because there is an atmosphere in America that encourages those who want to withdraw from Iraq. It is time that the American people support those who want to take them out of this Iraqi mud," said Jaara, speaking to WND from exile in Ireland, where he was sent as part of an internationally brokered deal that ended the church siege.

Jaara and others told WND that they believe if the Democrats come into power because of the party's position on withdrawing from Iraq, that ensures victory for the worldwide Islamic resistance.

Together with the Islamic Jihad terror group, the Brigades has taken responsibility for every suicide bombing inside Israel the past two years, including an attack in Tel Aviv in April that killed American teenager Daniel Wultz and nine Israelis.

Muhammad Saadi, a senior leader of Islamic Jihad in the northern West Bank town of Jenin, said the Democrats' talk of withdrawal from Iraq makes him feel "proud."

"As Arabs and Muslims we feel proud of this talk," he told WND. "Very proud from the great successes of the Iraqi resistance. This success that brought the big superpower of the world to discuss a possible withdrawal."

But WND was unable to get a single comment from dozens of telephone calls made over two days and messages left with various leaders' offices and press secretaries.

"I'll see what we can do," was the best response WND obtained when asking for a comment on the endorsement, and that came from Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Hammill in Pelosi's office. It came on the third call to that office.

The Democratic National Committee was approached at least six times, and multiple messages were deposited on a voice mail system handled by the courteous Rosemary, who said, "We're extremely busy," but there was no response, even after one spokesman in Sen. Barack Obama's office referred WND to the DNC because such a question would be in "Chairman Dean's" territory.

The Democratic Leadership Council's response to multiple phone calls was similar, a promise to call back later.

At least three messages left with Sen. Clinton's office went unreturned after a receptionist forwarded the calls to an answering machine, which informed WND that, "No one is available to take your call at this time."

Calls to Sen. Kennedy's office actually reached a live person, who listened to the request and promised, "If we're able to we'll shoot you something. We can't promise."

Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar's office generated a merry-go-round of telephone numbers. A call to his Washington office generated a referral to a Denver office, which generated a referral to a press office, which generated a referral to a cell phone. When a spokesman answered that number, the caller was referred back to the press office, which had an answering machine attached to the line. Leave a message.

A call to Sen. Harry Reid also allowed the caller to leave a message.

On the Republican side, Sen. Tom Tancredo, of Colorado, said those Mideast leaders are right -- in one way.

He told WND that the assessment by terrorists who suggested U.S. voters choose the Democrats on Tuesday because they believe an expected removal of U.S. troops from the Mideast would hand their factions victory is hard to dispute.

"I guess the conclusion to which anyone could come … maybe they recognize that both the general nature of the Democratic Party and the people who are at its head are folks that would rather cut and run than stand their ground on an issue of this nature," he said.

"They're right. I also worry about a lot of things, the way the war has been prosecuted. But beyond Iraq, here's what I believe. I believe that there are more Republicans than Democrats that understand we are in a clash of civilizations.

"In fact the idea that Western civilization has advantages over other civilizations, that is not a concept that most Democrats would buy into and I think the radical Islamic groups recognize that," he said.

The president's recent statements also have given those factions reason to hope for better results under a Democrat Party leadership than the existing decision-makers.

"Our goal in Iraq is victory," Bush said during a campaign stop this week. "Victory in Iraq will come when that young democracy can sustain itself, and govern itself, and defend itself, and be a strong ally in the war against terrorists.

"The fighting in Iraq is tough, and I understand it's tough, and you know it's tough, and so does the enemy. They have no conscience. They kill innocent men, women and children. They film the atrocities, they broadcast them for the world to see. They offer no hopeful vision. The only thing they know is death and destruction.

"But they hope these violent images will cause us to lose our nerve. They make a big mistake. They do not understand the true strength of the United States. We don't run in the face of thugs and assassins, we'll defend ourselves," he said.

Four ACORN Members Charged With Felonies

This from a left-wing group that is, along with the Democrats, the nation's foremost opponent to voter ID laws:

Four people have been indicted on charges of voter fraud in Kansas City, officials said Wednesday.

Investigators said questionable registration forms for new voters were collected by the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, a group that works to improve minority and low-income communities.

The four indicted -- Kwaim A. Stenson, Dale D. Franklin, Stephanie L. Davis and Brian Gardner -- were employed by ACORN as registration recruiters. They were each charged with two counts.

Federal indictments allege the four turned in false voter registration applications. Prosecutors said the indictments are part of a national investigation.

ACORN and Project Vote recruit and assign workers to low-income and minority neighborhoods to register people to vote.

The Kansas City Election Board told KMBC they found suspicious forms, such as seven applications from one person and an application for a dead man.

"There is some motive behind it -- this is not accidental," said Ray James with the Kansas City Election Board.

You betcha there's a motive behind it.  It's called "let's steal an election." After all, according to ACORN bragging they've collected some 35,000 voter registrations in Kansas City alone:

Last month, ACORN claimed to have processed more than 35,000 voter registration applications in Kansas City since the summer.

And Kansas City is in a state where in one election, key for both national Republicans and Democrats, 35,000 is more than enough to swing the race.

So, just to sum it all up for you, ACORN is working with Democrats to oppose voter ID laws across the nation even as ACORN is guilty of submitting fraudulent voter registration in states with hotly contested Congressional races.

As I've said before, if this were a right-wing group that had opposed voter ID's and then was found to have submitted fraudulent voter registrations in areas where key races were taking place the media would be all over this. It'd likely be the biggest final story right before the election. As it is, the media isn't interested in covering this at all.

Issaquah school bus driver fired for 'flipping off' president

ISSAQUAH, Wash. -- An Issaquah school bus driver who was fired for "flipping off" President Bush is trying to get her job back.

The 43-year-old has filed a union grievance against the district, claiming wrongful termination.

Congressman Dave Reichert said the obscene gesture occurred as he was traveling in the president's limo in June on the way to a fund-raiser in Medina.

At a freeway ramp the limo passed several Issaquah school buses. The students waved to the president and Bush waved back. Bush was having a good time until he saw the driver. Bush turned to Reichert and said the driver had flipped him off.

Reichert later called the school district and the driver was fired in September.

A spokeswoman, Sara Niegowski, said the gesture was "not at all appropriate modeling for students on the bus."

Al Franken has been cancelled in San Francisco

Al Franken, San Francisco, Air America

FRANKEN GIVING UP?

Stuart Loses SF, Station Suggests Exit Coming Soon

Check the main page for updates

Is Al Franken soon ready to hang up his headphones for good?

Our friend Stuart Smalley has just been cancelled in San Francisco, of all places, with station KQKE-AM's program director citing his impending depature from Air America Radio as the reason.

Is Franken looking for an early out on his contract, which expires next spring?

Here's KQKE Program Director Bob Agnew's letter to listeners, released late yesterday:

As we get close to one of the most important elections in our time, 960 The Quake is putting more outstanding talent on the air to help you understand where this country is heading and what you can do about it.

No one Air America personality's departure created as much of a stir as did Mike Malloy. 960 The Quake is pleased to announce that Mike Malloy is returning to the Quake's airwaves. On Monday, November 6th Mike Malloy will be heard live from 6pm to 9pm. Thom Hartmann will now move into the mid morning 9am to noon slot, replacing Al Franken.

There has been lots of speculation about Al Franken's future with Air America and his planned moved into the political arena. While there is nothing official at this time, it has been made clear to us that Al Franken will not be with Air America in the future.

We feel it is important to you that we have the most talented hosts on the air, who will be with us for the long term. We believe that Thom Hartmann is the new rising star in Progressive Talk radio and he is firmly committed to 960 The Quake for the long term.

We have also brought Rachel Maddow back to 960 The Quake in her new time of 3p-5p. John Scott will also return to host the afternoon version of the Progressive News Hour. We feel that circumstances with Air America has helped 960 The Quake build its strongest line-up ever: Our programming is live from 3a until 9p so you can become much more involved in the Progressive Process.

Our New Line Up effective November 6th will be as follows:

6AM - 9AM --- Stephanie Miller
9AM - 12N --- Thom Hartmann
12N - 3PM --- Ed Schultz
3PM - 5PM --- Rachel Maddow
5PM - 6PM --- Progressive News Hour
6PM - 9PM --- Mike Malloy
9PM - 11PM --- Randi Rhodes
11PM - 12AM --- Eco Talk w/ Betsy Rosenberg
12AM - 3AM --- Lionel
3AM - 6AM --- Bill Press

Note that fellow Air America talker Randi Rhodes has also taken a hit here, with a demotion to 9pm and cut to just two hours on the air nightly. What's left on KQKE is a B- List roster of mostly substandard "progressive" talk programming.

As for Hartmann, no reasonable case can be made that he's any kind of "rising star" in talk radio. Despite a considerable amount of time on the air, few stations have ever chosen to pick up his syndicated show and the ratings have been lackluster where he is heard. So this argument doesn't hold water.

KQKE's inability to generate even a tiny one share in the San Francisco ratings has been a source of embarassment for liberal talk radio, considering the political makeup of the Bay Area. In the most recent figures, the station generated a 0.9 overall, good for 27th place.

We also know that Air America Radio paid Clear Channel a considerable amount of money to air its shows on their San Francisco station, that's what kept Franken & Co on for as long as they were. With those payments cut off, the company has clearly lost its incentive to carry this failed programming.

As for Franken, we were inclined to believe that he would stick it out as long as possible, with the idea that the network would be bailed out by a wealthy suitor.

If you've been following this site for any length of time, you've by now learned that It Takes a Village To Keep Al Franken Fat and Happy. If there's even a penny of potential income to be gained, he's going to hang around for it.

Until a declared US Senate candidacy, which could be a year or more away, there's no reason why Al would have to leave the airwaves. And if he has a year ahead of him as a host, there's no immediate justification for cancelling his show, unless there's something else going on.

But if one of Franken's key stations cites his coming departure as a reason for dumping the show, we may have to take that at face value. Will Al address this on his program?

We're not holding our breath.
